Summary

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents the third book in the New York Times best-selling Pandava series by Roshani Chokshi。

War between the devas and the demons is imminent, and the Otherworld is on high alert。 Fourteen-year-old Aru Shah and her friends are sent on a mission to rescue two "targets," one of whom is about to utter a prophecy that could mean the difference between victory and defeat。 Turns out the targets, a pair of twins, are the newest Pandava sisters, though the prophecy says that one sister is not true。

When the Pandavas fail to prevent the prophecy from reaching the Sleeper's ears, the heavenly attendants ask them to step aside。 Aru believes that the only way to put the shine back on their brand is to find the Kalpavriksha, the wish-granting tree that came out of the Ocean of Milk when it was churned。 If she can reach it before the Sleeper, perhaps she can turn everything around with one wish。

Careful what you wish for, Aru 。 。 。

Percy Jackson meets Sailor Moon in this enchanting, funny, and adventuresome series inspired by Hindu stories。

Praise for the Pandava Series:*"Chokshi seamlessly weaves Indian cosmology and pop culture into a refreshingly feminist plot laced with witty dialogue。 The most compelling feature of the novel, however, is the complexity of its characters, who, despite their divinity or semidivinity, are at their core very human。 This will leave fans enthralled and clamoring for more。"--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Sometimes a weakness felt like a blade turned inward, but that meant it was sharp enough that when turned around, it could be a weapon。 You just had to be willing to face it and adjust your grip。 And that made it magic far more powerful than any celestial weapon。"So, back again with an amazing Pandava novel! I kind of forgot about Goodreads for a while (I was busy) but here I am, with an awesome, hilarious, action-packed, mythology-based novel by Roshani Chokshi! The war between the devas and the Sleeper is looming on the edge。 Word arrives that a clairvoyant—someone who can read the future and deliver prophecies—is being held captive by the Sleeper, along with her sister。 Aru and her sisters (and Aiden, the Pandava-adjacent) launch a search-and-rescue mission to find them。 And behold—the prophecy! It's not as reassuring as Aru hoped。 In fact, it says that one sister will not be true 。 。 。 (ominous, right?)So guess what? The Pandavas (and Aiden) do their best to interpret the prophecy, and—you guessed it—set off on a thrilling adventure to find the tree of wishes, Kalpavriksha, to set everything right。 And along the way, Aru unlocks some truly life-changing secrets 。 。 。"'Living things cannot help but be curious, to demand answers。 There is a cost to opening doors that are meant to stay closed。'"I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is DOWNRIGHT AMAZING。 With wise sage advice mixed in every now and then, along with Aru's trademark cheeky and sarcastic humor, waves of adventure, and strong mythology packed in, this book is all you can ask for。 (Also, the cover! This series has the best book covers。 Fight me。)5/5! I'd recommend it to anyone。 Enjoy your reading!"'The pollution that accumulates upon my surface has no bearing on my soul。' Aru nodded to herself。 Nice one。 Maybe she’d use that excuse next time she didn’t feel like showering。" 。。。more

I’m so glad this book arrived before weekend so I can spent my weekend reading it。 The tree of wishes is lit, the girls already mastering their celestial weapons and get used to fight。 Their fighting skills and sensitivity much improved。 Aiden seems to be more comfortable with aru and mini, the twins pandava seems difficult at first but that’s because of their background and typical sulking little sister。 I feel bad that all pandavas or potatoes share complicated background with family issues。 H I’m so glad this book arrived before weekend so I can spent my weekend reading it。 The tree of wishes is lit, the girls already mastering their celestial weapons and get used to fight。 Their fighting skills and sensitivity much improved。 Aiden seems to be more comfortable with aru and mini, the twins pandava seems difficult at first but that’s because of their background and typical sulking little sister。 I feel bad that all pandavas or potatoes share complicated background with family issues。 However it’s nice to see all of them get along。 The naga prince also made a great addition。 The more the merrier as the comic relief。 He might be conceited and spoiled but maybe that’s his coping mechanism with all the situation he has to beared at home。 His music and gemstone skills is fascinating tho。 Also it feels fresh that in first and second book the stories still center around pandavas adventure in mahabharat but in this book we stepped to broader hindu myth。 All of the trip to memory lane is heavy, I feel sorry for Aru they really stripped her。 I’m beyond happy for Mini, she always seems to be the last stronger and paranoid but here we see that she’s more powerful and wiser thant that。 I love how she answered all of the riddlers from Yamuni。 Still thrill for the Garuda bird entrance。 I never really dig into this majestic bird’s story so I really mesmerized with its chapters。 Many gods made an appearance and they all have their own irritating behaviour but smart tactics to see from the kids。 To sum up I can’t wait to read city of gold after the left hanging ending in here。 。。。more

Another fun installment in the Pandava series! We are also introduced to the last two Pandavas, a pair of young twins named Nikita and Sheela with the power of clairvoyance and control over plants。This book was a lot of fun and the humor was consistently great。 I preferred the plot of the previous book but this one was still interesting。 The stakes just didn't feel as high。 Although the ending was great and a huge cliffhanger。 If I didn't have the fourth book ready to go I think I would have lost my mind。 Aru's mental state grows more divided in this book。 Her insecurities are really strong and she is constantly pining over a life she never had。 She feels like she doesn't know who she should fight for or even who is on the right side。 All she knows is that she wants to protect her sisters and the world。 I definitely recommend reading this series even if you are not into middle grade。 The characters don't read like young children and they are all honestly very relatable。 The series is also hilarious so you will definitely have a good time reading it。 。。。more

This book series is shaping up to be five stars all around from me。 It's incredibly well written, with intricate plots and very real characters。 There's a lot of representation within these books, and it truly just makes me happy knowing that young BIPOC children have literature that they can see themselves in。 Since this is book three I'm mostly going to be discussing characters and giving general commentary on the plot。 CW: mentions of foster care trauma, kidnapping, parental trauma。 In this b This book series is shaping up to be five stars all around from me。 It's incredibly well written, with intricate plots and very real characters。 There's a lot of representation within these books, and it truly just makes me happy knowing that young BIPOC children have literature that they can see themselves in。 Since this is book three I'm mostly going to be discussing characters and giving general commentary on the plot。 CW: mentions of foster care trauma, kidnapping, parental trauma。 In this book our little squad grew by three, and oh how I loved the new characters so! But a quick look at how the preexisting characters have grown。 Aru is our main character and seeing the world through her eyes has been so fun。 She's grown into an incredible leader, and has compassion for others, and only lies when it can be of comfort to someone else。 Mini really shone in this book, she manages to stay calm in the face of danger when it used to cripple her。 Aiden has always been a calm, caring character with layers of trauma underneath, and that felt amplified in this book。 Our new Pandava twins are Guyanese and were taken from their parents and put into foster care。 They have unique powers and strong love for each other。 They have a hard time trusting outsiders, and really rely more on themselves。 We also got to meet Rudy in this, and oh boy is he a CHARACTER。 Easily dislikable but once we get to know him better he's just a cinnamon roll。 Or, a potato。 I love all of these characters for different reasons, and think they stand well on their own and work incredibly well together。 They just feel like well rounded kids。The plot of this was very fun。 Each book has had it's own adventure, with a big overarching plot that's going on and related to the adventure。 I like that it doesn't read like a monster of the week, and how intricate the plot of each book is。 And oh that cliff hanger ending GOT ME。The writing in these books is just so gorgeous, and I think that the way that Chokshi is weaving in stories from Hindu mythology is just expert level。 Once again the pop culture references work and are hilarious。 These books feel so good to read, though there's trauma present and the characters go through trials, it just is done so well。 10/10 would recommend this book to anyone, it's so fun! 。。。more

These books a great fun for their target audience - juvenile readers。 I find them a fun mental distraction and Chokshi has built a great real and mythical world with a funny bunch of kids。 I do think I need to change my method of consumption though。 I have done all three books in the series on audio and while Soneela Nankani does a fine job, her level of preteen sarcasm gets *very* grating over the course of three books and I just found myself less inclined to laugh the third time around (like c These books a great fun for their target audience - juvenile readers。 I find them a fun mental distraction and Chokshi has built a great real and mythical world with a funny bunch of kids。 I do think I need to change my method of consumption though。 I have done all three books in the series on audio and while Soneela Nankani does a fine job, her level of preteen sarcasm gets *very* grating over the course of three books and I just found myself less inclined to laugh the third time around (like calling themselves the "potatoes"。。。 maybe stupid funny in text but eyeroll/sideeye when presented in an audible preteen snark)。 Aru and the other Pandavas (or Pandava adjacents) have grown a lot of the last couple of books and Chokshi is subtly showing that growth really well。I still recommend this book to all kids and parents who come through the bookstore looking for Percy Jackson-style series (and even those who are new to the subgenre)。 Rick Riordan has carved out a very successful publishing niche and Chokshi's Pandava Quartet series is a stellar example。 。。。more

There was barely any dialogue with Urvashi and Hanuman, who were important to the last two books。 The final problem I had with this book was Boo。 In the first book, Boo was completely involved in Mini and Aru's quest。 As a reader, I really started to love Boo。 Then, Boo barely appeared in the second book, which I was fine with, but then, Boo has little to no time in the third book。 I wasn't in shock about his betrayel of the Pandavas because I hadn't seen him as a focal point in the books in forever。 I will still read the next books in this series, but this one just didn't succeed for me。 。。。more
